Top young musicians from throughout Europe founded the New European Ensemble in 2008. Their goal is to bridge the gap between new music and the public at large through exciting and expressive performances of 20th and 21st century music for chamber ensemble. The ensemble also strives to renew the concert format. The aim is to show that new music is relevant to society.
In 2010 the ensemble will create a partnership project with Amnesty International for a performance of Henze ‘Voices’, exploring human rights issues in the world today.
The New European Ensemble is made up of young soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral leaders from across Europe who are forging new paths in musical performance and connecting with a new generation of young composers. The youthful European appearance of the musicians lead them to choose the name New European Ensemble.
The ensemble’s qualities were apparent immediately following its inception. The New European Ensemble will be ‘ensemble in residence’ in Aldeburgh (UK) and has been invited to tour Sweden as well as present numerous productions in the Netherlands for the 2009-2010 season. The New European Ensemble’s first c.d. with music by Arnold Schönberg will be released in the coming year.
The ensemble is made up of a core group of 12 musicians and guest musicians are often invited to perform with the ensemble to expand the setting.
The ensemble’s artistic director is Christian Karlsen, a talented young Swedish conductor who recently debuted with the Hague Philharmonic and the National Orchestra of Porto.
