Festival 20/21 puts its unique focus on the superb music of the 20th and 21st centuries, in all its richness and diversity. The festival presents the musical goldmine of the 20th century to a wide audience, devoting special attention to a few newer ‘classics’ as well as saving a few underappreciated masterpieces from oblivion. Novecento is a festival for music fans, explorers and curious listeners who want to leave no door unopened.
10 classical concerts at a variety of locations in Leuven in September and October.
The sextet Vortex Temporum by the French spectralist Gérard Grisey is seen more and more as one of the great late-20th-century chamber music works.
Despite the recent success that Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker had with it, the work remains under-performed. Festival Novecento has turned the spotlights on it, and we you can hear the work not once, but twice in this concert. This gives you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in the wondrous temporal dimensions that Grisey sets out in Vortex Temporum. You’ll experience not only the human perspective but that of the whales, birds and insects.
There will be a short intermezzo between the two performances, during which the musicians will talk about their fascination with this work. Vortex Temporum is an absolute ‘classic’ for the New European Ensemble, since it was one of the pieces that inspired the founding of the group in 2008
New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
