about the programme
korzo theater The hague
David Binney is one of the great jazz saxophonists. All over the world he performs with the best jazz musicians of our time. He is an acclaimed composer as well. “David Binney is one of the most gripping and distinctive alto players and composers of his generation (Jazz Times)”.
We are very proud that David Binney will share the stage with us and has agreed to write new works for the ensemble: compositions, rooted in bebop, with lots of room for improvisation within a tightly organized framework. Music that transcends the boundaries of modern jazz and contemporary classical music.
The Dutch composer Oene van Geel is a comparable original mind and also active as a performing musician, for example in the well known string quartet Zapp4. We commissioned a new work for solo viola (the instrument Van Geel plays himself) and ensemble, in which Indian music, music from the Balkan and contemporary music merge.
This concert is supported by the American Embassy in The Hague.
New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
