about the programme

the hague korzo

Michel van der Aa and Silvia Colasanti share a passion for music theatre. Van der Aa entered the lime light with his operas After Life and Sunken Garden, Colasanti with an opera about Faust, in which she shed new light on the age old legend. Also in their pieces for ensemble one easily senses the theatre. In this colourful double portrait the New European Ensemble performs four 'mini-dramas’.

The ensemble is joined by the soprano Keren Motseri, who sings two pieces in which madness plays a central role. In Van der Aa’s Here she gets entangled in a schizophrenic dialogue with the shadow of her own voice, that with the help of live electronics emerges from all over the place. In Svetlana Azarova’s Épices the names of French herbs provoke a sensual and hysterical monologue.

The ensemble presents two ensemble pieces by Silvia Colasanti. In To Muddy Death Ophelia she pays an imposing tribute to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Burning is a dazzling piece full of colour and dramatic contrasts. Van der Aa matches her music with Mask, in which he gives the percussionist a theatrical role.
