Arthur Rimbaud’s Une Saison en enfer was written in a rundown farmhouse on the French-Belgian border in 1873. The poet was heavily under the influence of absinthe, opium and alcohol, which explains the often hallucinatory and personal character of the texts. Rimbaud’s wide-ranging texts are paired with the exploratory music of Berio, Saariaho and Gubaidulina who all sought out new sound worlds and colours in their works for flute, harp and viola.
